Book Review: A Worthy Rebel by Jody Hedlund

About the Book

A desperate noblewoman, a rebellious peasant, and a forbidden love.

While fleeing an arranged betrothal to a heartless lord, Lady Isabelle becomes injured and lost. Rescued by a young peasant man, she hides her identity as a noblewoman for fear of reprisal from the peasants who are bitter and angry toward the nobility.

Cole Warwick cannot turn his back on a person in need and soon finds himself falling for Izzy, the gentle and beautiful runaway who is mending in his cottage. As the leader of an imminent uprising against the nobility, he tries to resist his growing feelings for Izzy to protect her from the dangerous life he’s chosen. But the longer she stays, the more he hopes she’ll never leave.

When Izzy’s true identity is revealed, Cole feels betrayed. With the rebellion underway, can Cole forgive Izzy and find a way to save her from an unhappy marriage? Or will he and his peasant army be destroyed before he has the chance to fight for the people and the woman he loves?

My Review

When to seek peace, and when to fight for justice-that is the conundrum presented in the latest installment of the An Uncertain Heart YA series by Jody Hedlund.  Previously featured characters made welcome appearances in this stand-alone novel.

Beautiful Lady Isabelle wasn't as strong and brave as her sister, but she was good and kind and that eventually led to acts of bravery and sacrifice. Cole, a hard-working peasant, was strong and courageous, and protective of his family. As with Hedlund's other books, I was fully involved in the story from the first chapter on. I was pleased that the novel didn't wrap up too quickly and easily at the end.

Written for young adults, this was a novel of clean language and pure characters. However, in the medieval setting the harsh realities of cruelty, warfare, and peasant life were not glossed over.

Fans of historical, medieval romance will enjoy this book, regardless of age.

I received an e-ARC of this book from the author for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

About the Author
Jody Hedlund is the author of over twenty historicals for both adults and teens and is the winner of numerous awards including the Christy, Carol, and Christian Book Award.

Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. Although Jody prefers to experience daring and dangerous adventures through her characters rather than in real life, she’s learned that a calm existence is simply not meant to be (at least in this phase of her life!).

When she’s not penning another of her page-turning stories, she loves to spend her time reading, especially when it also involves consuming coffee and chocolate.

My Review

This was a lovely book.  Physically, an embossed gold filigree design on a shiny red border gives the cover a beautiful, festive flair.  The inside pages are also decorated with that same design.

The story was lovely as well.  It chronicled a three wagon train traveling to California from Missouri in 1850.  The travelers, of necessity, went from being strangers to much more than that, as the hardship of cross-country travel at that time brought out their true character.

This novella would be an ideal choice to read in front of the fire during the Christmas season.  It is a quick, cozy read, perfect for historical romance fans.   It would also make a wonderful gift.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Shiloh Run Press, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes.  The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Book review: Lone Witness by Rachel Dylan

About the Book

Prosecutor Sophie Dawson's first job in the White Collar division of the Fulton County D.A.'s office is to build a case against a local bank employee who may be cheating clients. But when circumstances beyond her control leave her as the only witness to a double homicide involving a vengeful gang, her world is turned upside down.

Former Atlanta police officer turned private security guard Cooper Knight is hired to ensure that Sophie is kept safe. But as threats escalate, they don't know who they can trust.

Sophie is determined not to back down, but her bank case gets more complicated by the day, and the gang will stop at nothing to keep her from testifying. Sophie wants to take a stand for what's right--but can Cooper, who is determined not to be distracted by their growing attraction, keep her safe so that she can finish her pursuit for justice?

You can get a copy of this book here.

My Review

Lone Witness, book two of the Atlanta Justice series by Rachel Dylan, is a page-turner!  It definitely stands on its own, as just the main characters from the previous novel are mentioned.

I loved Sophie, the feminine lead.  She had a strong sense of who she was and what she wanted out of life.  She was equally aware of potential weaknesses in her life.

There was plenty of action, lots of bad guys, and much looking over your shoulder.  For those who enjoy suspense and courtroom drama, this is a book you'll want to pick up.

I received this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes.  The thoughts expressed here are my own.
