Jody Hedlund has become one of my favorite authors in recent years, and she has written a masterpiece in Luther and Katharina: A Novel of Love and Rebellion. It releases on October 6.
The writings of Martin Luther had been smuggled into Marienthron, the convent where Katharina von Bora had lived since she was five years old. As a result of those teachings, she and eleven other nuns escape at night from the cloister, and are delivered to Black Cloister near Wittenberg, home of Dr. Martin Luther. Luther takes the women in, and reunites them with their families, or secures marriages or placements for each. Katharina is left. She is skilled in doctoring, medicinal herbs, and music, and ends up treating Dr. Luther for his ailments on more than one occasion.
Doctor Luther is dedicated to preaching and writing the truth of necessary reforms to the church. Katharina wants to be loved and have a family. As the events of the book unfold, the two are drawn to each other, yet both are stubborn and will not admit to their attraction.
It was so enjoyable to watch Katharina’s character develop. Katharina, part of the upper class, has confidence and leadership skills, which enable her to advocate for her fellow nuns, but her title also gives her unfounded pride. It was wonderful to read about her maturation as a person and in her relationship with God.
It was amazing to get to know Martin Luther, as well. He sometimes came across as a crotchety old man, but he had a heart that cared deeply for people.
I learned so much from this book-the customs, the culture, and the politics of the time. One cannot read this book and not develop a sincere appreciation for what Martin Luther did in standing up for and proclaiming the truth of the Bible.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to those who like historical fiction, church history, and romance.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.
About the author:
Jody Hedlund is an award-winning and bestselling author of inspirational historical romances for both youth and adults.
As a busy mama-writer, she has the wonderful privilege of teaching her crew of 5 children at home. In between grading math papers and giving spelling tests, she occasionally does a load of laundry and washes dishes. When she's not busy being a mama, you can find her in front of her laptop working on another of her page-turning stories.
She loves reading almost as much as she loves writing, especially when it also involves chocolate and coffee.
